|Chapter One|

~*~*~*~
Being stuck for five hours in a car with two siblings who liked to cause as much noise and havoc as possible and just be plain irresponsible wasn’t Castiel’s idea of a fun trip. Still, his mind was stuck on last night's dream, one of the many recurring and although the scenes would change it was always him and Balthazar. It was trouble considering they were brothers. Not that he really cared what with Lucifer and Michael being together and all, he just didn’t what that kind of life for himself.
He was just glad Sam was there.
It was Sam and Gabriel’s final year, and he was going to miss his best friend deeply. He had met Sam when he’d moved in next door. They had gone to the same grade school, and when the kids picked on him because of Michael and Lucifer’s relationship, he had stood up for him. They had been the ‘geek squad’ - Raphael had dubbed them that – ever since. They would get together and LARP Lord of the Rings or play video games and study together.
Then Sam met Gabriel.
It had been a nightmare with Gabriel pulling as many pranks on him as often as he could, and with the two year difference Sam graduated onto high school before him. He’d been lonely those two years but once he’d made it into high school, it was like they’d never been apart.
But by then Gabriel and Sam were dating.
It turned out; the reason for Gabriel harping so much on Sam was because he’d liked him. Castiel didn’t know what to think about it at first, but when he saw how much they cared about each other and he was sure they wouldn’t get hurt he’d come to accept it. In fact, Gabriel made Sam very happy, and even though they’d sometimes fight – less often then Cas thought they would – they were always smiling when they saw each other.
Plus Cas still got to see Sam all the time, so it was all good.
“What are you thinking about, Cas?” Sam asked, drawing him from his thoughts and he blinked, trying to clear his head before turning his attention to the freakishly-tall man next to him.
“What, hmm, oh, just stuff.”
Cas hadn’t told Sam about his dreams, which was weird because he told Sam everything, so keeping this a secret was hard. He had a feeling Sam knew he was hiding something, but he didn’t push which was what Cas loved about Sam. He always knew when to pry and when to back off, when Cas needed the help or when he’d tell him in his own time. This was one of the times he wanted to wait to tell Sam.
“You always over think-things little bro,” Gabriel called from the driver's seat. “Need to shut that nerdy brain of yours off.”
“Hey, I’m a nerd too,” Sam countered.
“Yes Sammy, but you get laid and have fun.”
“I have fun, Gabriel.”
“Have you gotten laid?”
Cas opened his mouth and then shut it, his cheeks tingeing pink because no, he hadn’t gotten ‘laid’. In fact, he’d really never done anything sexual with anyone which was why his dreams were so startling. Gabriel was chuckling and Balthazar was rolling his eyes, which made him sink down in his chair, while Sam patted his head like you would a puppy.
“It’s okay Cas, there is nothing wrong with waiting.” Sam smiled. “I’m sure you’ll meet Mr. or Mrs. Right sooner or later.”
Sam was a God send.
“Thanks.”
Cas settled back down.
The car they were in was small and packed completely with their belongings. Cas and Sam had no leg room – Sam hardly had any at all to begin with, and you could tell he was uncomfortable – and their laps were stuffed almost roof-high. Still, they could see each other and mouth words that his brothers couldn’t see. It was fun because they knew they were curious but neither of them were going to ask; they had pride.
“So, this is your last year, hey Sam?” Cas stated. “What do you plan to do after?”
“Well, I am really hoping to get into a few firms, and the teachers said with my grades it’ll be easy for me to get good recommendations.” Sam smiled.
Sam was hoping to become a lawyer.
His older brother – Dean – worked at the car garage their father used to own, but Sam wanted to go to school and become a lawyer, had for as long as they’d known each other. Cas, well Cas was always fascinated by History. He enjoyed learning about the wars and the fight for independence and he always believed that by remembering your history, you could learn to stop repeating it, to get better.
He was hoping to be a teacher.
“What about you Gabriel? It is your final year as well.”
“I plan to raise as much hell as I can…Oh, you mean after school? I wanna open a small bakery, so I guess I’ll have to get a small job to save up, and if Sam becomes a rich lawyer, I’ll just mooch off of him.”
“Like hell you will.”
“C’mon baby, you know you’d let me.”
“Ha, you’re funny, I’ll tell you just what you’ll get…”
Cas zoned out, blocking out the bickering as he tried to catch Balthazar’s refection in the mirror – he’d been unusually quiet – only to find out he’d been watching him. Cas caught his eyes in the mirror and held them, everything else fading away as he stared into the grey depths of Balthazar’s gaze, like a deer caught in the headlights. They stayed like that for what felt like hours, until Bal broke the contact, looking away.
Cas blinked and frowned before staring out the window, watching the highway that seemed to go on forever. He sighed and sunk down in his seat as much as he could and closed his eyes, willing them to be there already, where he didn’t have to stare at Balthazar and be reminded of the dreams that did very bad things to his body.
Two and a half hours into the ride they stopped at a pit-stop, Gabriel having to go to the bathroom and Sam’s stomach growling loudly. Cas didn’t mind the time to stretch his legs and he bet Sam thought it was heaven to get out of the SUV.
The SUV was Gabriel’s and was a dark red Audi Q7 SUV Hybrid. It had been Sam’s idea to get the Hybrid, because it was environmentally friendly, and they had all saved up to get it, so technically it belonged to them all but Gabriel used it the most. He didn’t mind though, he was never one for possessions and he planned to get his own car one day.
There was the sound of another car pulling up and Cas turned to see a deep purple 2003 Mustang Convertible. Two girls were inside, one with long-wavy red hair and green eyes – his little sister Anna, who was starting her first year of college – and a curly blond with hazel eyes - Jo, her best friend.
Jo was starting her second year with Anna and Castiel.
“Are we going to fast for you Annie?” Balthazar grinned, seeming more like himself.
“Bal, call me that again and I’ll beat your ass,” she snapped and got out of the car while Jo laughed and shook her head.
“Okay, so a half an hour break and then we’re back on the road,” Sam said before heading inside. Cas sighed and looked around for a place to sit, because he wasn’t hungry and he didn’t need to use the washroom – he made sure to grab a snack before leaving.
He finally found a tree by some grace and made his way over, trench coat brushing against the back of his legs. It wasn’t cold, not really. He just loved the coat, it was something Bal had gotten him for his birthday a few years ago and since then he took it everywhere with him. It was just nippy enough for him to wear it without getting heat stroke.
He sat under the tree and pulled his knees up, placing his book on them as he opened them to where he’d left off – he didn’t use book markers, he always just knew where he’d left off – and let himself get lost in his latest crime thriller. Most of the books he read were mystery, crime or thrillers and if he could find a good mixture of all of them he’d be ecstatic. Two out of three wasn’t bad though, and he was enjoying ‘Knock Out’ by Catherine Coulter.
He liked Agent Savich and Ethan was pretty cool too, though Autumn was the real mystery.
Just when he was getting into it, he heard the sound of grass rustling and he lifted his head to see Sam sit down with his lap top. Cas smiled and nodded to Sam who grinned.
“Needed to get away from the yelling match that was going on, really, they should learn to stop picking on Anna. She’s a red-head, they are always fiery.”
“Gabriel is a red head as well, and he does have a temper.”
“That is very true.” Sam nodded. “Still, I think Anna’s getting close to killing them both, Jo’s the only thing holding her back. It’s a wonder you two are twins, your so, soft.”
Yes, he and Anna were twins, though not identical. Anna, like Gabriel, looked more like their mother than their father. Not that they really knew their mother, she had died shortly after Anna had been born.
Cas raised an eyebrow. “Soft?”
“Like, you don’t lash out and you're quiet, you’d rather work things out then get in a fight.”
Cas sighed because maybe dream Gabriel had been right, maybe he was vanilla, but he liked who he was, being the good brother who got good grades, studied hard and didn’t get trouble. The rest of his siblings got into enough trouble for him and then some, so he liked being quiet. It sort-of made him an outcast in his family, the black sheep, but they all loved him still and didn’t harass him too bad about it.
“Not that’s there’s anything bad about it, I like it; gives me a break from my boyfriend for a while.” He laughed. “Besides, you're kind and you're fun, no one else would dress up as an elf to defend ‘The One Ring’ with me. Or go out as Robin Hood with me for Halloween.”
Cas smiled. “Thanks Sam.”
“Besides, you never call me Sammy, and that makes you awesome.”
“Sammy? Oi, Sammy, where are you? Not on the lap top again I hope!”
Sam rolled his eyes. “Remind me again why I am dating him?”
“Um, nothing I care to say?”
They both laughed and soon everyone was over, and the noise had moved to them as everyone wasted the last ten minuets chatting, or in Gabriel’s case, annoying Sam. It was a nice break before getting stuffed back in the cramped SUV, only two and a half more hours till they reached the College.
Cas was a little excited, and he guessed that made him a nerd, but there were a few people he was looking forward to seeing again, and he did like school, and most of the teachers were pretty cool. Plus he wouldn’t have to see much of Balthazar, which really sounded worse then what he meant, because he loved his brother and loved hanging around with him, but with these dreams. Well, Cas didn’t know how to handle being around him anymore.
It was nerve-wracking
“So, Cas, you looking forward to this year? It may not be your last, but it’s your second year, no longer the newbie.” Sam grinned and he could see Gabriel rolling his eyes.
“Yeah, I hope it’s a good year. And besides, I hang around with you enough it’ll feel like it’s my last year.” Cas chuckled and Sam laughed.
“Yeah, that’s true.”
“Can you two be any more nerdy?” Cas and Bal complained at the same time.
Cas and Sam exchanged looks.
“Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by size, do you?” Sam spoke in his best Yoda voice.
Gabriel groaned and Bal started to lightly hit his head off the window.
Both Sam and Cas broke into fits of laughter.
Cas looked up at the building that they’d be at for ten months with a huge smile. They were finally there.
“So, Anna, Cas and Jo will be going their way, Sammy and I have to go to an assembly and Bal, you know where your going right?”
Balthazar nodded and stuck his hands in his pockets, duffel slung over his shoulder. They’d meet up for the rest of their stuff later.
Cas turned and walked with Jo and Anna towards some tables where they were handing out dorms and time tables.
“So, who are you sharing a dorm with?”
Cas stared down at his dorm number and he let out a soft whimper because the fates, the fates were working against him and someone up in heaven must really have it out for him because this, this was bad.
“What, what’s going on, who is it?”
“It’s Bal…”
